Inspired by the breathtaking ceiling paintings collaboratively created by 144 renowned modern Japanese painters at the Sanshokaku of Eiheiji Temple, the head temple of the Soto school of Zen Buddhism in Fukui Prefecture, this obi showcases over 200 floral and bird motifs.
The left side features a gold base, while the right side has a silver base. With only over 10 colored yarns, various flowers and animals are vividly expressed. The intricate weaving is evident in the details of even a single section.
The reverse side incorporates designs from Rinpa artists such as Sōtatsu, Kōrin, and Hōitsu, along with motifs by Jakuchū and Ōkyo. This harmonious composition invites the observer to explore and appreciate the distinctive styles of these celebrated artists.
The ceiling painting of the Great Hall of Sanshokaku at Eiheiji Temple includes patterns with carp and guardian lionswhich are believed to bring good fortune if discovered. These auspicious motifs are also intricately woven into the obi, allowing you to make a wish and seek them out as you admire this exquisite piece.
