Certified Hikibaku craftsman Masaru Matsui is also a distinguished artist who creates original works that embody his mastery of Japanese lacquer and foil techniques. Here, you will find a selection of his refined creations.

Please visit his workshop to experience Hikibaku and see more of his artworks there!  We offer a Hikibaku Workshop Tour in which you can choose one of the following to create using lacquer and gold leaf. 

• Sprinkle gold foil on a leaf, acrylic coat it, and use it as a bookmark, etc.
• Apply gold foil to chopsticks and create your own pair
• Bring your own smartphone case. Design it, create the gold foil parts, and the traditional craftsman Matsui will lacquer it to complete the work. It will be sent to you later (lacquer takes about a week to dry)
• Create a freeform artwork on a 15 cm square washi paper using lacquer and gold leaf. You can choose white washi or lacquer-colored washi. The color variation is as below. It will be sent to you later as lacquer takes about a week to dry
