Collection: Japanese Lacquer and Foil Original Art

Certified Hiki-baku craftsman Masaru Matsui is also a distinguished artist who creates original works that embody his mastery of Japanese lacquer and foil techniques. Here, you will find a selection of his refined creations.

Please visit his workshop to experience Hiki-baku and see more of his artworks there!  We offer a Hiki-baku Workshop Tour in which you can choose one of the following to create using lacquer and gold leaf.

  • Sprinkle gold foil on a leaf, acrylic coat it, and use it as a bookmark, etc.
  • Apply gold foil to chopsticks and create your own pair
  • Bring your own smartphone case. Design it, create the gold foil parts, and the traditional craftsman Matsui will lacquer it to complete the work. It will be sent to you later (lacquer takes about a week to dry)
  • Create a freeform artwork on a 15 cm square wa-shi paper using lacquer and gold leaf. You can choose white wa-shi or lacquer-colored wa-shi. The color variation is as below. It will be sent to you later as lacquer takes about a week to dry
