We have woven one of the representative works of Millet, a central figure in the Barbizon school who often depicted peasants, "The Gleaners," into Nishijin-ori fabric.
Three poor peasant women picking wheat are depicted in the bright morning light, presenting a seemingly tranquil scene that sympathetically portrays the harsh reality of impoverished farmers. The original artwork by Millet achieves great depth through its use of perspective, created through the contrast of distant and close-up views, as well as the strategic use of light. Nishijin-ori, traditionally focused on Japanese aesthetics lacking such depth, faces a significant challenge in interpreting this piece, requiring extensive research and experimentation. The artisans' endeavor has resulted in a unique interpretation of the original, offering a different flavor for viewers to appreciate.
