The Van Gogh painting "Sunflowers" from the National Gallery in London has been masterfully transformed into a Nishijin-ori textile masterpiece, exquisitely framed to showcase its luxurious artistry.Traditionally, Van Gogh used contrasting background colors like blue and green to make the sunflowers stand out. However, in this work, he adopted a technique of using a yellow background to make the sunflowers stand out through his painting style.

Expressing the nuances of oil painting's layering and brushwork in Nishijin-ori was a completely new endeavor, different from weaving motives from Japanese paintings. There were many trials and errors, from the choice of warp threads, color selection, dyeing, to the introduction of new looms. This work could only be completed through the courageous efforts of the Nishijin-ori artisans.

More than 20 colors of yarns were used, and nearly 10 of those were different shades of yellow and orange. By combining these colors, the delicate differences in the colors characteristic of Impressionism were woven into the fabric.

This work encapsulates not only Van Gogh's sensibility, but also the challenging spirit of Nishijin-ori artisans, and the pinnacle of their technique and color sense.
