This piece, “Beauty Looking Back”, created by the early Edo period ukiyo-e master Hishikawa Moronobu, known as the father of ukiyo-e, has been woven into Nishijin-ori.
In Japan, it was uncommon to portray a single figure in a painting, making this work a groundbreaking example that set a new trend for depicting individual subjects. Despite being relatively small compared to our other products, the empty space surrounding the artwork, enhanced by a wider frame, creates a delicate atmosphere that perfectly complements the elegantly rendered woman in her finely expressed garment.
The hairstyles and fashions of the early Edo period are depicted with remarkable detail, showcasing intricate patterns of the kimono and obi, as well as the delicate openwork of the kanzashi (hairpin), all beautifully expressed with twelve colors of thread through Nishijin weaving. The framing, designed to complement the colors of the kimono, further enhances the artwork.
