Van Gogh's masterpiece "The Langlois Bridge at Arles" is a warm-toned painting depicting an ordinary landscape, with clear outlines of the bridge and flat coloring reminiscent of ukiyo-e woodblock prints. It is said to be inspired by Hiroshige's works.
Eighteen colored yarns are used to create diverse hues. The combination of pale blue and white yarns in the sky expresses the atmosphere of the scenery, while yellow and golden brown are used for the drawbridge and foliage, evoking the presence of sunlight. The foliage is woven in a three-dimensional manner to add texture and express Van Gogh's unique brushstrokes, and the water surface is softly woven to convey its freshness.
Van Gogh frequently depicted textile weavers, and the technique of layering colored yarns to weave a variety of colors may have influenced his late painting style. Van Gogh's paintings, whose colors appear to be mixed when viewed from a distance, resonate well with the art of weaving.
