We have woven "Water Lily Pond," which is part of a series of 18 works by Monet, a representative Impressionist painter, depicting the scenery of the water lily pond with the famous Drum Bridge as the centrepiece. The original is housed in the National Gallery in London.

Nishijin-ori's shading technique "shimikomi," which involves weaving with approximately 18 different colored weft threads shifted subtly over moss green warp threads, capture Monet's brushstrokes amazingly. The flat perspective of a drum bridge seen from the front and the depth of a lake viewed from above are both beautifully rendered through weaving.

In addition, in the painting, the reverse side of the water lily was accented with dark red, the opposite colour of green, but in Nishijin-ori, rust vermilion and pink were intentionally used to create a subdued atmosphere. This aspect makes the artwork fascinating and deeply reflective of the sensibilities of Nishijin-ori artisans.
