This artwork, created during van Gogh's stay in a mental asylum in his final years, celebrates the birth of his nephew. The blooming almond flowers symbolize the end of the long European winter and the beginning of new life.
This piece uses a weaving technique called "simikomi," in which yarns of different colours are gradually layered, creating a blurred effect. In addition, to express the thickness of the oil paints, dozens of thin yarns are layered and woven softly. The flowers are tightly woven with thick yarn so that the almond flowers stand out clearly against the blurring background. This is a work where you can feel the delicacy of technique and colour sense of Nishijin-ori artists throughout.
