The Aśura Statue, a revered National Treasure housed at Kōfuku-ji Temple, is believed to have been commissioned by Empress Kōmyō in the Nara period to honor her late mother. This exquisite statue, renowned for its three faces representing childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood, subtly captures the nuances of each stage with remarkable realism.

Unlike our hanging scrolls that depict the entire figure, our artwork focuses on the upper portion of the Aśura statue from a left diagonal perspective. The depiction of only the upper portion of this artwork enhances the viewer's appreciation of the texture and details inherent in the original dry lacquer (kanshitsu) statue. This focus allows the intricate craftsmanship and realistic expressions of the Aśura statue to be highlighted, showcasing the exceptional quality of this ancient Japanese technique.

This piece not only captures the essence of the Aśura statue but also elevates it through the meticulous craftsmanship of Nishijin weaving, making it a distinguished addition to any art collection or interior decor.
