In the late Edo period, the ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai created his famous series "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji," and three particularly popular pieces from this series, "Fine Wind, Clear Morning," "The Great Wave off Kanagawa," and "Shower Below the Summit," have been woven into Nishijin textiles. These present a distinct texture not found in prints, while the lavish use of pure gold and platinum leaf imbues them with a rich visual depth, fully capturing the allure of Nishijin's fine weaving.

You can enjoy famous ukiyo-e artworks from a different perspective.

The Great Wave off Kanagawa

This is a masterpiece among masterpieces, known to everyone. The bold and dramatic composition, with contrasts of stillness and motion, humans and nature, and distance and proximity, is superbly expressed in the weaving.

The technique of using platinum leaf yarn for the spray of the waves and genuine gold leaf yarn for the wave crests vividly expresses the sparkle of water. Additionally, by blending various colors in the sky, the sense of atmosphere and depth depicted in the ukiyo-e art is exquisitely captured.
