In the late Edo period, the ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai created his famous series "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji," and three particularly popular pieces from this series, "Fine Wind, Clear Morning," "The Great Wave off Kanagawa," and "Shower Below the Summit," have been woven in Nishijin textiles. These present a distinct texture not found in prints, while the lavish use of leaf imbues them with a rich visual depth, fully capturing the allure of Nishijin's fine weaving. You can enjoy famous ukiyo-e artworks from a different perspective.

Shower Below the Summit

The scene depicts Mount Fuji’s slopes, divided into zones of calm and chaos. On one side, the mountain stands serenely under a clear sky, its iconic red hues glowing with warmth. On the other, dark storm clouds roll in, unleashing a sudden shower that cascades down the mountain's rugged surfaces. This sharp contrast between tranquility and tempest is magnificently rendered by Nishijin artisans, with the use of platinum leaf for the clear sky and genuine gold leaf for the rainy sky. In this woven version, the texture of the mountain’s surface under the shower is beautifully depicted through subtle color shifts.

With genuine gold leaf and platinum leaf
