This piece showcases an exquisite woven motif inspired by Ogata Kōrin’s renowned “Irises”, originally painted on two folding screens now part of the Nezu Museum collection. Created with only three colors, Kōrin’s masterpiece is celebrated for its opulent yet restrained elegance, achieved through a bold composition and the lavish use of over 1,000 gold leafs alongside mineral pigments like malachite, bringing the irises to life in rich, vibrant hues.
The original screens present irises in both close-up and distant views, a dynamic approach that imbues each panel with a unique perspective. In our woven rendition, this motif has been reimagined, spanning the full width of the framed textile to create a distinct impression that harmonizes yet diverges from Kōrin’s iconic folding screens. Through Nishijin-ori’s intricate weaving techniques, the softened patina of Kōrin’s aged gold leaf, which has gently dimmed over time due to oxidation, is captured with slightly subdued, lustrous gold leaf threads. This nuanced effect evokes the refined beauty of the original, offering a sense of depth and history.
The irises depicted on both screens are meticulously woven into a set of Nishijin-ori framed textiles, available as a stunning pair. This arrangement not only preserves the integrity of Kōrin’s original vision but also enhances the atmospheric presence of the artwork, transforming any space with its timeless elegance and serene grandeur.
