A French Early Impressionist painter and sculptor, Edgar Degas is known for his works featuring ballet dancers as subjects. He sensitively captures the momentary movements of dancers in practice or on stage. We have woven his "Two Dancers on the Stage" into a stunning piece of Nishijin-ori textile art.
What is noteworthy is the beautiful and adorable facial expressions of the dancers, drawn by Degas' keen observational eye. The bold composition with a large space in the lower left corner accentuates the presence of the dancers while linking the gaze and pose of the girl on the left with that of the girl on the right, creating a sense of mutual response.
The diagonal composition from above the stage wings is probably due to the fact that Degas was a member of the Opera House and was able to observe ballet practices and rehearsals. The three-dimensional feel of ballet costumes and the dazzling movements of the dancers are expressed using the delicate Nishijin-ori technique.
